Fluechem’s team of industry experts have more than 12 years of experience in the AUS40 and Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) Industry and a proven track record in delivering technical and operational solutions and support across a wide range of vessel types and locations.

Whether it’s 1,000 litres in IBCs or 100,000 litres in bulk, by lorry or by barge, our deep-rooted industry knowledge allows us to deliver tailored, pioneering solutions for new build vessels across the globe. We’re experienced in working in the most challenging and complex locations, tight turnaround times and complex requirements where many years of hands-on involvement ensures our customers receive a best-in-class service every time.

How we can help

A marine engine installed on a ship constructed on or after the following dates and operating in an NOx Emission Control Area shall comply with the Tier III NOx standards defined by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) as follows*:

  • 1st January 2016 and operating in the North American ECA and the US Caribbean ECA
  • 1st January 2021 and operating in the Baltic Sea ECA or the North Sea ECA.

All other marine engines installed on ships constructed on or after 1st January 2016 shall comply with the Tier II NOx standards defined by the IMO.
*There are three exceptions to this: recreational vessels <24m, propulsion <750kW and recreational ships prior 1st January 2021 <500GT & >24m

The most effective ways to comply with NOx emission standards are:

  • Including low pressure gas engines
  • Exhaust gas recirculation
  • Scavenge air moisturising
  • Selective catalytic reduction (SCR) where urea or ammonia is injected in the exhaust gas before passing it through a unit, which consists of special catalyst layer
  • Chemical reaction between urea/ammonia and NOx in exhaust gases reduces NOx to N2 delivering >90% NOx reduction

SCRs are arguably the most widely used technique and with growing public concern over ammonia transportation, transfer and storage, urea injection (typically AUS40) is becoming the preferred option.
